The “Hanging President”

President Pranab Mukherjee runs the risk of being named the “Hanging President”!

Of course, he did not open the trap doors through which Kasab and Afzal Guru hung down. And, Pranab will not be the one who will be tightening the noose around the necks of the four associates of Veerappan who were condemned and whose mercy petitions were rejected. All the same, the convicts are being hung in his name. And, Pranab’s logic is that he is saving the exchequer some money and helping fiscal consolidation.

As the finance minister not too long ago, he was under pressure to reduce the deficit. But, the then president did not go with his plan of murdering all the convicts on death row to save money (one of the arguments trotted out in support of death penalty). It was then Pranab decided that if he got the chance he will hesitate no further in putting his plan into action. He is being true to his convictions, as strong as they are.

But, in the process he is helping the current finance minister, P Chidambaram. Even as President of India, one cannot eat his cake and have it too! Pranab is finding out the limits of what can be rained down from Raisina Hill!

He must be content with being called the “Hanging President!”

Having been the Finance Minister of the country for many years, Mr Mukherji knows the costs incurred in keeping alive so many high security criminals...

Well, being a little more serious, we live in a country which gives more value to langurs than human beings.

Still more seriously, I'm not sure I'd disagree with Mr Mukherjee.

There is nothing to agree or disagree with Pranab da.

But, do look at the arbitrariness ... whether one is given clemency or not depends on who sits on top of Raisina Hill. That is where you should agree or disagree with death penalty, per se, and not any particular case.

Ditto ditto about the verdict of death penalty or life sentence or reduced years by the 'persons' in the judiciary pronouncing the verdict as well.

Arbitrary? As arbitrary as most things in this imperfect world.

Sir,

May be Pranab is right, now.

Thanks,

Yes, definitely Aditi; but being arbitrary in the FINAL SOLUTION should make one stop and think. This is the difference.

DMRS,

As I responded to matheikal, it does not matter whether Pranab is right or wrong ...also, please read my response to Aditi's comment.

Balu,

Just look at the other side of the fence ... those that have NOT been given the death sentence ... Could any one of them deserved the death penalty ... arbitrariness cuts both ways.
